What we have learned about the whitening of EPDM flooring?

One of the visual defects you may find on an EPDM rubber surfacing job is the whitening on top of the initial colour after some time, usually a few months or half an year. There are some colours that seem to be more likely to have the problem, and normally you can find this anomaly mostly on lower quality EPDM.

Causes and Solutions

·White or light-colored rubber granules require the addition of whitening agents during production. However, after prolonged exposure to sunlight, these whitening agents lose their effectiveness, accelerating the yellowing process.

Solutions:

•Use Baoli weather-resistant EPDM granules.

•Apply water-based UV topcoats for longevity.

·Insufficient paint durability

Using organic pigments (such as certain blue and light-colored granules) instead of inorganic pigments results in poorer resistance to ultraviolet rays and oxidation, and they are more prone to decomposition and fading.

·Rubber Aging ：UV and oxidation break molecular chains, causing hardening.

Solutions:

•Use Baoli high polymer EPDM playground surface granules with Aliphatic PU binder

•Restore with topcoat applications.

·Color Fading：Caused by insufficient UV stabilizers or low-quality pigments.

Solutions:

•Use UV resistant Baoli EPDM granules

·Continuous contact with water.

Solutions:

•Ensure ground is flat and no depressions.

•Use proper drainage, avoid long-term immersion.
